I have a great teacher, and a very difficult one. One of the biggest things I struggle with is when I draw with my kids. I’m always looking for the exact moment I want to draw, but I don’t always have the perfect moment. I find myself wanting to draw something that’s in my head, like a memory. I’m drawn to doodles and drawings that make me smile, like the ones of my teacher.
The problem is that teachers aren’t supposed to be that. They have the job of teaching, but not the job of drawing. I think the best way to describe teachers as a role is to say that teachers should be able to draw, but not teach. The problem is we don’t see teachers as teachers, we see them as drawing. It’s the same thing with my kids.
I think there are a lot of problems with this idea of teachers as teachers. First, drawing is a skill that can be learned. I am by no means a great penciler, but I can draw in a way that makes me look like I know what I am drawing, and I can look at it long enough for my instructor to be impressed. I do think drawing the teacher as a teacher is a good idea, but the problem is that teachers aren’t supposed to be teachers.
The teacher is not a person who has a job, who is responsible for a job, who is a person who can be trusted.
