After his death in 1980, all we knew of Malachi was that his life and career had taken an unexpected turn. In the early 1960s Hemphill had moved to Washington, D.C. from a small town in North Carolina, where he had been a student at Wake Forest University and worked as a reporter for the newspaper The Charlotte Observer. His rise in the journalism world was not what he expected, however, and by the mid 1970s he was working for the Washington Post.
Then in 1978 he began a whirlwind career as a freelance reporter, where he covered the civil rights movement (and the U.S. war in Vietnam). In 1982 he moved to Los Angeles and became a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times. In 1984 he became the Washington bureau chief for Time Magazine. In the late 1990s he became a founding member of the Washington, D.C. bureau of the New York Times.
Now he’s currently working for Fox News, where he writes a daily column and contributes to the network’s political podcast, The O’Reilly Factor.
You’d think that all this would be enough to get Malachi Hemphill to talk to the press, but no – he decided he needed to see the full stream of the interview. In the video above, he explains how, when he was a young man, he used to dream of becoming a reporter. He then tried to get a job as a staff reporter at the Times but couldn’t get a job. Instead he worked on a freelance basis.
He explains how he tried to get into journalism and how it took him a while to get a job. He also discusses the reason he was not able to get a job as a staff reporter of the Times and how he was the only one who could get a newspaper to hire him. He also discusses how he thinks journalism is a “terrible” job and how he thinks it is one of the most important things in the world.
That being said, there were a few bad things about the job that Malachi was offered. First, his boss had to make him a formal resume. Second, he was required to take a class in journalism. The class was a mandatory class that taught you how to write a good article on anything, which you only had to do if you wanted to get a job at a newspaper. He hated it but that’s what he had to do.
Being a journalist is one of the best jobs out there. Its a job that requires a great deal of knowledge, a lot of experience, and a good amount of self-awareness. If you don’t like the job, you can always go write something else. But to say that a journalist is a terrible job is just not true.
