I want to give you a quick background lesson on Ramana Maharshi. He was an Indian mystic who devoted his life to studying and practicing the spiritual path. He was a spiritual teacher and the founder of the Ramakrishna Math, a spiritual community in South India, and the spiritual guru to millions of people around the world.
Ramana Maharshi was born in a village in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in 1869. He moved to the United States at the age of 17. In 1895, Maharshi became the spiritual leader of the Ramakrishna Math in New York City and served as its first spiritual leader. Over a century later, in 1998, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The Ramakrishna Math is an organization of some 4,000 people, all of whom live in India. The Math’s aim is to create a community with a single purpose: to free themselves from all kinds of inner darkness, to be free from the suffering that comes from the mind and body experiencing the world in a negative way. In the Ramakrishna Math, the goal is to realize the supreme self, or spiritual self.
Ramakrishna is also the author of a very popular religious text called the Bhagavad Gita, which we are going to be reading in this article. In the Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna that there are four levels of consciousness. At the lowest level, you are just a mere animal, just another being that has to eat, sleep, and reproduce. At the next level, you start to experience spiritual awareness.
The second level is the pure, spiritual self. This is the self that can transcend the animal world, into the transcendent, divine, self-realized state. The third level is the second-stage self, the real self. This is the self that can experience the transcendent state. The fourth level is the super-self, which is the highest stage of realization.
